Fact Set #2 An Alarming Event Dateline

An Alarming Event Dateline: TULSA, Okla.

Just when she thought shes seen it all at 95, Mabel McCullough’s birthday cake was able to set a fire alarm and send firefighters dashing to the scene. McCullough’s women’s group from the First United Methodist Church put on a birthday party for birthday on September 27th. With help McCullough was able to blow out all of her candles on her delicious carrot cake, which created a large cloud of smoke.

Eddi Carlin one of the guests stated “There wasn’t an inch to spare. By the time we had them all lit, it looked like a torch.” “We had just sat down to eat when we saw them in the doorway.” She was refereeing to the 24 firefighters at the doorway. The smoke from the candles set off the fire alarm, resulting the five engines and two ladder companies to arrive. Fire Chief Lonnie Lamb stated “In my 23 years on the job, I’ve seen a lot of things set off a fire alarm, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one going off because of a birthday cake.” The firefighters took pictures with McCullough as a memory of her 95th birthday.

Good concept for a feature lead, but it doesn't quite jell. How about something like:

At 95, Mabel McCullough thought she'd seen it all. But when 24 Tulsa firefighters crashed her 95th birthday party, well, she was surprised.

Of course, the firefighters were surprised too. They were responding to a fire alarm at First United Methodist Church, where the party was being held. They expected to find a fire, not a bunch of smoldering candles on a birthday cake.

This would be a good place for the fire chief's quote. Then you could explain how it happened.
