The magazine segment project was a fun learning experience. I enjoyed creating the graphic box the best. The only thing that did not come out the way I wanted was the broadcast script because I did not have access to Garagband or iMovie, so all I could do was post it on my blog. The actual writing of the review took a lot longer than I thought because I kept adding and taking away parts that I did not like. I also reviewed many different restaurant reviews before I completed my own. In the end however I wish that I could have added something about the restaurant's drinks which I forgot in my review. I also thought that writing the broadcast script would be easier but in the end it was more difficult than I thought; because I had to take out a lot that I wanted to add on in my script, because it could only be 60 seconds.
If I could do the project over again I would try to be a lot more organized, especially with my broadcast script. However, I did feel that I did a good job writing the review. The part that I enjoyed the least was the 60 second broadcast script because I wish that I could have been able to put it on Utube and was able to post it on my blog. The thing that I had most difficulty with was trying to access iMovie and Garageband, especially since I was not able to get into the classroom, because I am taking the online class. I would definitely change that about the class because sometimes it made it difficult to fully participate in the projects, when not having access to iMovie and Garageband. Overall I felt that I definitely got a better perspective of a journalists work, and I really enjoyed the class. My major however is Public Relations and I am content with it, but I did feel that this journalism class was able to help my writing skills and that will surely be able to help me in the Public Relations field.

Life Parole:Too harsh for Juvenilles?
Is a fifteen-year-old old enough to be tried as an adult? "Today, inmates in 39 states and a federal prison are serving life without parole for crimes they committed as youngsters. Five states — Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Michigan, Florida and California — account for two-thirds of the cases documented by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International." Many teenagers committed crimes as teens now as adults understand and admit to their horrible mistakes.
There are some cases where people do believe that a teen should be locked up for life, but in some cases it is not seen that way. An example of a man who at sixteen- years-old began hurling pop bottle firebombs at an old house not knowing that three innocent children where in the house and all died. The young sixteen-year-old teen was sentenced to life in prison. He is now in his thirties and regrets that day of life knowing that he could never take back what he did. Many believe that some juveniles should not have to live a life in prison, because many did change as they have become adults. The question is a very difficult one which gives mixed feelings. The question now would be who to spare and gets life in prison?

Sudan protesters: Execute teacher
It saddens me to think that other countries freedom of speech is shunned and people can be put to death for speaking their mind, or at times be executed for nothing they did wrong at all. In Khartoum, Sudan, Gillian Gibbons an elementary school teacher was sent to a woman's jail where she has been detained for more than 10 days for having her seven year old students name a teddy bear Muhammad.
Leaflets distributed by Muslim groups condemned Gibbons as an "infidel" and accused her of "the pollution of children's mentality" by her actions. Gibbons asked the children to pick their favorite name for the new class mascot, which she was using to aid lessons about animals and their habitats. After reading the article it seemed extremely ridiculous that Gibbons was sent to jail, or even thought of being executed. The children where the ones who named the mascot. The people of Sudan were very offended but I believe that it is ridiculous to send someone to jail for a thing like that. one thing is for sure that when one travels to another country one should be careful of what they say or do.

Ethical Decisions Questions
1. If I were interviewing a high government official about a bribery scheme and came across some paperwork that has to do with the case while the government official is not in the office, I would ask her about them when she returns back into the office. I would not steal or read the papers. When the government official returns I would ask her about them to see if she could give me information about the papers.
2. I am not sure if I would get a job as an orderly at a local nursing home, and write a story based on my experience. I could get into a lawsuit or even have my career ruined if I did. I could also however, end up with a real good story and could help a lot of people. Overall I most likely would not get an undercover job as an orderly, at a local nursing home, because I would be too afraid of the risks.
3. If I were writing a feature story and find some good quotes form another written source I would definitely credit the quotes from the written source in my story. If I obtained some good quotes online and decided to use them, I would also credit my sources too.

I believe that the bold part of the article can be found libelous. The bold part of the article shows unprofessional conduct and immorality and that is part of two categories of libel. If the bold part of the article is false it definitely counts as actionable libel. I would omit the article, or at least the bold part of the article because it could qualify as actionable libel and could get the editor in trouble if printed out or broadcasted to the public.
A sophomore at Springfield University claims a chemistry professor has sexually harassed her.
Karen Hart, 123 Hill Hall, says the professor, George O.T. Jungle, has touched her during tutoring sessions in his office and has invited her to his apartment several times. She said she declined his invitations."I am having trouble in the class and I have to go see him to get help with my papers and projects," Hart said. "But I am scared to go in his office now."
Jungle denied having an improper contact with the student and threatened this newspaper with a libel suit if it published the story.
Hart said she is thinking of filing a formal complaint with the university.
"I don't know how to do that," she said. "I don't know what to do."

Thought about dating: She's hot and he's not
According to Julia Allison dating consultant and columnist of Time Out New York, “everywhere I see gorgeous women with only moderately attractive -- or even downright unattractive – men.” After reading the article I pondered the statement and found that it seems in fact true. As Allison was saying it is even showing up with celebrities. For example Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Tesse, Billy Joel and his wives are some perfect examples of the she’s hot he’s not.
Over the years I myself have even been asked or people have asked my mother, “She is so beautiful, why she is dating him, referring to my boyfriend.” While many people do not confront you because it is rude, that is the first thing people look at when they see a couples, is their looks. Looks is not everything and many people know that but still one can’t help but wonder.
At times though is seems as men have it easy in the dating department. Although one thing to think about, is that woman can do many different things to alter their appearance, while men cannot, or if they do are seen as strange. The important thing to keep in mind is that it isn’t all about the looks and maybe beautiful women want men that are only moderately attractive or are unattractive so they don’t need to ward off other women all the time?

Much talk has been going on about the 2008 presidential election. In many classes this has been a hot topic. On the CNN website there are loads of articles that talk about many different issues and how the presidential candidates vie different issues.
The main issues are abortion, immigration, same sex marriage, the war in Iraq, social security, healthcare and taxes. The issues that I looked into a lot more were immigration, social security, abortion, and same sex marriages.
I was surprised that both the democrats and the republicans had similar views on immigration as far as being opposed to it; both parties were not in favor to it at all. Another thing that I noticed was that both parties were apposed to same-sex marriage. The democrat part was more in favor to civil unions but many of the candidates were opposed to same-sex marriage.
Overall reading the different articles and all the democrat and republican candidate point of views helped me get new perspectives about the election. Although I felt that on many topics many of the candidates had similar views except for a little bit of a different twist on certain issues, which led me to think that Democrats and Republicans are not very different from each other.

There are three segments to the magazine segment project. For the first segment of project the magazine style piece; I propose to do a review on a restaurant. The restaurant that I propose to do the review on is a local downtown restaurant called The Melting Pot. It is a fondue restaurant located in downtown San Jose. To accompany my magazine style piece I will develop a graphic to go along with the restaurant review.
The 60 second broadcast script will include if possible a quote from one of the chefs or staff members of the restaurant. The broadcast script will be in a form of a television restaurant review. I am either going to post the script on my blog or try to obtain access to iMovie or Garageband to post it on my blog if possible.

There are 20,000 injuries in high school football each year; 12 percent of the injuries permanently disable the victims and are injuries to the neck or head, most critics blame the helmet.
Thirteen youths died last year. Thirty-five percent of the injuries were at the neck or the head, disabling many. This is exactly what happened to sixteen year old Pete Stenhoff, 16, a junior at Chula Vista High School in Redmond, California. His senior year he was hurt when he rammed his head into the ball carriers chest
Stenhoff cracked his vertebrae in his spine and is now confined to a wheel chair for life. He now weighs 172 after being 210 pounds. Although he is confined to a wheelchair he is not a bitter person and is trying to get his diploma by taking correspondence courses since he was not able to graduate with his class. He still says "I knew the risks involved when I decided to play football," and adds, "I wish I would have known just how bad it could be."

A honeymoon night is a night to remember, especially if your car gets high- jacked, which is definitely something no one wants on their honeymoon night. Last night 21- year- old Alan Ticas Soto high- jacked a car with a woman waiting on her husband by a Taco Bell for a late night snack on their honeymoon night. According to police and Sheryl Wolcott a San Mateo County Deputy District Attorney, Soto told them he had been taking methamphetamines for three days straight.
Sheryl Wolcott: No attorney has yet been assigned to Ticas-Soto's case by the county private defender program. If he's found guilty, Ticas-Soto could face up to nine years in state prison. (:13)
The preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for May 10th.

Bay Area rent rates are jumping sky high, as the average monthly rents in cities like San
Francisco and San Jose, have jumped more than ten percent in the last year. Across the nine
Bay Area counties, the average rent is around One-thousand-five hundred, up nine percent
from about One-thousand-four hundred, 12 months ago. That is not likely to change in the near
future, many economists like Michael Carney, director of the Real Estate Research Council of
Northern California, say it could be years before home values stabilize. While Bay Area firms
continue hiring, that could add more pressure to the rental market. Carney says, “Assuming the
economy stays the way it is, the demand for rentals will remain quite high.”

Reporting with Numbers
1) A local college releases figures showing that its total budget is $120 million. Of that total, $80 million comes from the state, $6 million from student tuition, and the remaining $34 million from fees, grants and gifts.
· Figure the percentage of the college’s budget that comes from each source. 66.6% comes from state, 5% comes from student tuition, and 28.3% comes from fees, grants and gifts.
· Using plain words, instead of numbers, explain the proportion of funding that comes from different sources. Say it in the way you think would make it most easily understood.
66.6% of the local college’s budget comes from the state, while 28.3% comes from fees, grants and gifts and the remaining 5% of the college’s budget comes from student tuition.
2) Your editor assigns you to do a story about prison sentences handed down in cases of aggravated assault. He gives you the following figures from an anti-crime group that is lobbying for tougher sentencing guidelines. The cases represent the people convicted for aggravated assault in San Jose in one month in 2006.
Name Sentence
Ron Nguyen 1 year prison, 2 years probation
Richard Smith 1 year prison, 1 year probation
Wesley Mitchell 14 months prison, 1 year probation
Mary Carr-Jones 1 year prison, 1 year probation
Carl Rodriguez 1 year prison, 2 years probation
Harold Rothstein 8 months prison, 1 year probation
Michael Reese 7 years prison, 5 years probation
Calculate the average prison term for people convicted of aggravated assault, taking care to convert some of the terms to figures that will compare properly (months vs. years). 12+12+14+12+12+12+8+84= 22months = 1 yr.10 months
Calculate the median prison term for people convicted of aggravated assault. 8,12,12,12,12,12,14,84=12
· Explain why you think the average or the median is the most accurate description of prison terms.
The median is the most accurate description of prison terms because the majority of prison terms for aggravated assault in San Jose are one year. The medium is 12 which are twelve months which equals one year. The average is a much longer term because it added a few more months because of the lone seven year term.
3) The state legislature is considering exempting restaurant food sales from the sales tax in the same way grocery sales are exempt.
·Explain how much fast-food patrons who pay $5 per meal would save in a year if they eat out once a week. Base your calculations on the state sales tax only, not local/city taxes.
48*5=240/7.25 state sales tax =$17.40
If you spend $5 dollars per week eating out only once a week you will save $17.40 a year.
·Explain how much people would save if they spend $20 per meal once a week for a year.
20*4=80*12=960 .0725*960=$69.60
Now if you eat more fast food and spend $20 per meal once a week for a year in a whole year you will be saving $69.60 that is enough to buy you two weeks or more of groceries!!

An Alarming Event
A birthday cake set off a fire alarm today and sent firefighters dashing to the scene. Mabel McCullough’s birthday cake with 95 candles set off the alarm which created a large cloud of smoke.
The smoke from the candles set off the fire alarm, resulting 5 fire engines and 2 ladder companies to arrive. Fire Chief Lonnie Lamb said that in his 23 years on the job he’s seen a lot of things set off a fire alarm, but never a birthday cake.

Student Media Press Conference
As Sam Donaldson entered the Dwight Bentel Hall in room 133 everyone began to clap loudly. “You don’t need to clap for me just because I entered a room” he said. Sam Donaldson is known for being outspoken. He was 1998 Broadcaster of the year and has won four Emmys and two George Peabody Awards.
The press conference which lasted almost an hour had an array of questions from many students. Donaldson said he grew up on a farm in New Mexico. His grandfather purchased land in New Mexico before New Mexico was a state. He attended the University of El Paso Texas in 1951.
A question was asked if he always knew that he wanted to be a reporter or did he know at a very young age. He did not know what he wanted to do but he knew he wanted to be a “somebody.” He was in the army but he knew he did not want to stay in the army forever, he did it because at the time did not know what to do and he was married with a family. Although when he was nine years old he does recall pretending to report the news that he was hearing on the radio about World War II, but at the time he did not know he wanted to be a reporter.
“This job can be tough on family life because it is a high pressure job.” He has been married three times but now has been married for twenty-five years. He said he would outwork his colleagues because many of them would not take an assignment because it was their son’s birthday or they were going on a ski trip or something. “Journalism was always first for me” he stated. He would always take the assignments and that is how he got to where he is today.
What is a story that really affected your life? “Since 1994 I have one story” he says. He went to Argentina to meet a man who was a captain in the SS. Volunteer committee. The man followed orders from the German army to kill many men. The whole time the man tried to make Donaldson understand why Hitler wanted him to kill these men and why it was ok. Donaldson said to him “Many people think you should be executed for what you did.” The man said “you are not a gentleman.”
What does it take to be a good journalist these days?” another student asks. “Things have to interest you” he says. “You have to be able to dig and collate all this information.” “What’s really going on it not going to be told,” he says.
At the end of the press conference after answering his last question Donaldson said “Nothing will ever be the same you should welcome change.” Those words are the words of a true reporter, Mr. Sam Donaldson.

News Story 5
Runaway Truck
A runaway truck caused a fire yesterday and knocked out power in El Cerrito and neighboring cities including Berkeley and Richmond. The accident was on Moeser Lane in El Cerrito. The large asphalt truck, a ten wheel hauler, was overturned and smashed against someone’s house. The truck snapped a power pole and damaged five vehicles very badly.
El Cerrito police Detective Sgt. Shawn Maples was one of the first rescue workers to arrive at the scene. He stated that he heard cries coming from the burning truck flipped on its side and the house and he started to dig through the debris, spotting the driver lodged between the wheels of the truck. Maples said that the driver’s legs were mangled and he couldn’t move. Maples along with help from Police Chief Scott Kirkland and Detective Ken Zinc were able to pull the driver to safety. Maples said, “We dragged him out in a heartbeat while the truck went up in flames. I just wanted to get him of there.”
Another witness named Ruben Sharma who lives across the street from the single story home that was destroyed by the fire, said he was about to head back to work around 1:30 when the crash occurred. He stated that at “First, I thought it was a major earthquake. This is unbelievable.” His front yard was littered with bricks, broken glass, car parts, splintered wood, palm fronds and other debris.
A Honda sedan also hit by the truck was so crumpled that the driver was trapped inside. Rescue workers had to slice into it and peel back the roof to save the trapped driver. The other cars in the accident were also damaged. The truck driver whose name was not released broke both of his legs in the crash. He is listed in serious but stable condition at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

‘Jena 6’ teen’s case to be heard in juvenile court governor says
I first heard this story in one of my mass communication class’s and was surprised why I did not hear about this story that much in the media. It began with some white teenagers hanging nooses on an oak tree at a high school and escalated into six black teenagers beating up a white teenager. Prosecutors originally charged all six black students with second-degree attempted murder and conspiracy in the school yard beating. The court ruled that the students should have been tried in the juvenile court system instead of the adult since the teenagers were 16 years old. The story is very controversial because many people feel that the black students are being punished to extreme and the story has many racial controversies.
The news values that this story has are conflict and currency and impact. The conflict is obvious in the story and it shows by the march with Martin Luther King III and Al Sharpton. The issue is current and the impact is very large, because depending on how the trial goes this will be a major current civil rights event.

News Story 4
The Carjacker
A honeymoon night is a night to remember, especially when your car gets stolen when you are in it. This is exactly what happened on Saturday night when a 22 year old bride who was still in her wedding dress had a man jump in her car and try to steal it. 21- year old -Alan Ticas- Soto is now facing felony carjacking charges and misdemeanor drug charges; apparently he was high on methamphetamines at the time of the carjacking. He is being held in the San Mateo County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Ticas-Soto does not have a criminal record. He pleaded not guilty in San Mateo Superior Court on Monday.
The newly married couple, whose names were not released, was planning to spend their wedding night at a nearby Embassy Suites. The newlyweds had stopped off for a late night snack at the Taco Bell on East Fourth Avenue in San Mateo for a late-night on their way to the hotel, when the groom got out of the car, a 2003 Nissan Altima, and left the engine running. His new wife stayed in the car while he headed toward the restaurant. Police said the groom hadn't even gotten inside the restaurant when Ticas-Soto ran through the parking lot and leaped in the idling car. However the police said he didn't get very far. First, he hard a hard time getting the car into reverse, and had to fiddle with the gear shift a bit before getting it into gear. Ticas-Soto was distracted by the screams of the bride in the passenger seat, she was frantically trying to unbuckle her seat belt and get away from him. The groom then saw what was happening and he ran back and opened the passenger-side door, trying to help his wife get out of the car. She finally tumbled out, landing on the parking lot. She was unhurt, though shaken. Ticas-Soto put the car into a forward gear and promptly smashed into a Taco Bell sign, according to the police. He leaped out of the car and ran away. In the meantime, witnesses called the police.
Patrolling nearby, police officer Brendan Boyle noticed a man matching the suspect's description. The man was running southbound on South Delaware Street at Ninth Avenue. Boyle called it in and patrol cars converged on the scene. They caught Ticas-Soto and arrested him without incident. Police say he told them that he'd been taking methamphetamines for three straight days.
Sheryl Wolcott, a San Mateo County deputy district attorney stated that the couple was not injured in the incident but, “This took them a little off-track." There is still no attorney that has yet been assigned to Ticas-Soto's case by the county private defender program. If he's found guilty, Ticas-Soto could face up to nine years in state prison for the carjacking. Wolcott stated that a preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for May 10.

New Story 3
Gas Line Break
A high pressure gas pipe ruptured forcing about 100 people to leave the South Market area near Folsom and 11th Streets in San Francisco yesterday. PG&E workers stated that the construction crew was trying to repair sewer lines when they severed a two-inch underground gas pipe with a backhoe a little before 12:30pm yesterday.
Traffic was at a complete standstill. Many people were very angry because they were forced to leave the area, like Samantha Feldman of Wa-Ha-Ka restaurant. She says her employees and patrons were forced to leave. The restaurant's at the corner where the construction crew had been working. Feldman said the restaurant lost about $500 worth of business in the shutdown. Carlann Lauria, a manager of Crocker's Lockers said, "Ask my customers. They were pretty irate." Crocker's Lockers is a self-storage company on Folsom near 10th Street. The employees however did keep busy, as they went outside the police perimeter to collect payment checks from their customers. PG&E did do their best and were able to get the gas turned on by 5:09pm yesterday evening.

New York: Iran’s leader can’t visit ground zero
Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad wanted to visit ground zero in New York City. New York City officials said not because it is under construction. The United States also considers Iran a state sponsor of terrorism. Many leaders like Hillary Clinton and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani stated that the request was “audacious” and “unacceptable.” A statement issued on Wednesday called the rejection “unfortunate.”
This new story had impact because it took back people to September 11th. The story also had some bizarreness because most American’s were appalled that the Iranian President wanted to visit ground zero and leave a wreath there. Many people view Iran as a sponsor to terrorism so it was an odd request from the President of Iran.

O.J. Simpson ordered held without bail
I have not heard much about O.J. Simpson in a while until this news article. He was accused of two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime and burglary with a firearm, police said. The district attorney, meanwhile, said he expected Simpson to ultimately be charged with seven felonies and one gross misdemeanor. O.J. stated “an auction house owner Tom Riccio called him several weeks ago to say some collectors were selling some of his items. Riccio set up a meeting with collectors under the guise that he had a private collector interested in buying Simpson's items.” Overall the story is not clear because police are still investigating.
The story has timeliness because it is recent and just happened today. The story also has prominence because if this had happened to an ordinary citizen it wouldn’t be as important. Also since O.J. Simpson had been in the news a lot in the past because of being accused of murder this story was more prominent because if he does anything that is controversial he is now gong to be seen as a criminal to many people in the public eye. The story also has conflict because there are too many allegations going on.

The Fog Index
Average number of words in sentence- 18
Total number of "hard" words - 9
18+9=27
27*0.4=10.8
Fog Index-10 th or 11th grade level
I thought my writing level would be 7th grade, I was surprised. I also learned from this exercise that my writing is a little too wordy and I should try to minimize the amount of words I have in each sentence.
Writing Sample-
This story really surprised me because personally I have not heard about Osama Bin Laden for some time now. It is also the first time in three years that he has appeared in video. Rumors were being said that he died of kidney failure in the end of last year or the beginning of this year. That is why the story surprised me that he was on television because I thought he had died. He addressed that the war would not stop unless if they won or Americans converted to Islam. Officials are still trying to figure out more information but the video seems to be recent because it has recent information in it.

Smoking Wheels
Imagine witnessing smoke come from near the wheels of a plane that is about to fly off.
This is exactly what a landing tower employee saw coming from the wheels of a Northwest Airlines jet flight 428 plane at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, following a flight from Minneapolis at the Municipal Airport today. All forty passengers were evacuated from the flight.
Missing Boy
After missing for three years many would have given up hope for the search of a seven year old boy. But Monday night after three years the boy has finally been found.
The boy was found in Brick Township, New Jersey. A neighbor recognized the boy’s picture when it was shown after the movie Adam: The Song Continues and immediately called the police. The police arrested the boy’s mother Ellen Lynn Conner, 27; as she faces charges and interference with a custody warrant.

The story I chose has impact because it has something to do with the whole United States not just a certain area so it will impact many people. It also has timeliness because it is a brand new story. Also the U.S. received the information before Al-Qaeda. The story is also current because as I said it just came out on Friday.

AP Style Exercise # 1
The new head of the Journalism Department, Dr. Deborah Dunwoody Ph.D., recently bought a house at 6 Riverside Dr. in San Mateo, a lovely city in the SAN FRANCISCO Bay Area.
“What kind of person would break in to my apartment and steal my brand- new thongs!” she cried.
The instructor asked her pupils to read chapter six in the text, and to pay close attention to the section on the Great Depression, which began in the late 1920s and continued through the '30’s.
Ms. Smith, has not let partial blindness or wheelchair confinement stop her from living life to the fullest. In spite of her handicaps, she volunteers at a local senior center, and enjoys going for strolls (she calls them “rolls”) with her friends.

Got what it takes to be a Reporter?
According to the self- assessment test Journalism is a good fit for me but I may require changing my attitude or improving some skills. I am not Journalism major so I am not worried. If I was to be a Journalism major however, the questions seemed to fit the job requirements. The quiz did help because I am a Public Relations major and there are some things about Journalism that intertwine with Public Relations.

Week 1 Top News Story
NFL Suspends Michael Vick
The Michael Vick’s story has been everywhere in the news and in my classrooms. Although I am tired of hearing about the story it is the top story of the week. Michael Vick not only violated the terms of his NFL contract but many people including young children looked up to him and many people’s point of view about him has changed. The story has prominence because I am sure that if he was not a celebrity and was just a regular man that was gambling on dog fights it would not have gotten attention from the national news media.
